The short answer

Choose a HEIC or HEIF photo and request JPG, adding the form’s actual size limit if needed. WhatTheFile decodes it locally and creates a separate JPG copy.

Try the example in WhatTheFile

Why the photo opens but will not upload

Your phone may save photos as HEIC or HEIF, while a form only accepts JPG. Renaming the extension will not change the image format. WhatTheFile can decode HEIC and HEIF locally and create a JPG copy.

Choose the original phone photo

Select the HEIC or HEIF file, then enter Photo must be JPG and under 200 KB. Replace 200 KB with your actual limit. If there is no limit, just request JPG. The image decoder loads when it is needed, so the first preparation may take a moment.

Check the framing and output

If you also request dimensions that change the shape, review the crop before confirming it. Then check the prepared file’s format and size and inspect the photo at normal viewing size. Keep the original HEIC as your higher-quality source.

If the file cannot be opened

A damaged or unsupported image may fail to decode. Try exporting a JPEG copy from the photo application on your device, then select that copy. A screenshot is a less useful fallback because it can change dimensions and lose detail.

Try this example

We will open WhatTheFile and place Photo must be JPG and under 200 KB in the requirement box. You can review and change it before preparing your file.
