Prepare your files with confidence. Your files and the instructions you enter stay in your browser. Here’s how we protect them, and what limited information helps us run the site.

Your files and what you type
Files, previews and prepared downloads are processed in your browser. We do not upload them to our servers. Filenames, instructions, text read from documents and edits you make also stay local.
We do not send this content to analytics, record your keystrokes or replay your session. You can close or refresh the tab to clear working files and results from memory. Files you download remain wherever you save them.
How we understand website use
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand which pages are useful and how well the site works. We look at overall patterns, without building profiles of individual people.
- Traffic: visits, page views and referring websites.
- General audience information: country, device type, browser and operating system.
- Performance: loading speed, responsiveness and layout stability.
These measurements are sent to Cloudflare. They do not include your files, filenames, tool instructions, document text or feedback form contents. We do not use them to identify you or infer your age, gender or occupation.
Cloudflare says its analytics uses no cookies, local storage or fingerprinting to track individuals. Its performance reports may include technical details about page elements and resource addresses; we keep user-entered content out of those details. Read how Cloudflare measures website performance.
When you send us feedback
If you submit the feedback form, your message and optional reply email address go through FormSubmit to support@whatthefile.org. Your selected file, prepared download and tool instructions are not included.
FormSubmit may process your IP address and browser information, and says it keeps submissions for 30 days. Please leave sensitive personal information out of your message. Read FormSubmit’s privacy terms (PDF).
Information needed to run the site
Our hosting provider, AWS Amplify, may process ordinary request information such as your IP address, the page requested, browser information and the time of your visit. This helps deliver and protect the website. It does not include the files you process here.
Your browser may cache public website assets so tools load faster. WhatTheFile has no user accounts, advertising or application cookies. External websites we link to have their own privacy policies.
Keeping this promise up to date
If we change what information we collect or how we use it, we will update this policy and the relevant on-page wording before releasing the change.
