WhatTheFile is a free set of browser tools for preparing files. Please use it responsibly and check your downloaded copy before relying on it.

Using WhatTheFile

You may use WhatTheFile for lawful personal or organisational purposes. You are responsible for the files you choose, your right to use them, and where you later submit or share them.

Check your downloaded copy

We try to interpret your instructions and prepare a matching file. Review the understood requirements, the final checks and the downloaded copy. We cannot guarantee acceptance by another website, organisation or authority.

Some changes are lossy. PDF compression and DOCX-to-PDF conversion create image-based pages without searchable text, links, interactive forms or digital signatures. Word layouts and page breaks may change. Markdown-to-DOCX uses standard styles, without custom macros or corporate templates.

Automatic checks and word detection can miss things. You remain responsible for deciding what is appropriate to share and checking that private details have been removed. Keep your original file and read the relevant guide before relying on an output.

An independent tool

WhatTheFile is not affiliated with or endorsed by a government agency, examination authority, employer, visa service or other form provider unless explicitly stated.

Your privacy

Your files and tool inputs stay in your browser. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand overall website traffic and performance, not what you type into the tools. The privacy policy explains what is collected and how feedback is handled.

Availability and warranties

The service is provided on an “as available” basis without a promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or suitable for every purpose. To the extent permitted by applicable law, no implied warranties are made.

Liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the service operator is not responsible for indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the service, rejected submissions, missed deadlines or loss of a local file. Nothing in these terms excludes a right or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Changes to these terms

Features and these terms may change as WhatTheFile develops. Material changes will be reflected by the effective date on this page.
