The short answer

Choose a DOCX and request PDF to create an image-based copy locally. Check fonts and page breaks. Use your editor’s PDF export when searchable text or accessible structure matters.

Try the example in WhatTheFile

Start with the Word original

When a portal asks for PDF and you have a .docx file, you need a conversion, not a renamed extension. Keep the editable Word file so you can fix layout or content later.

Choose the right kind of PDF

WhatTheFile renders Word pages and creates an image-based PDF in your browser. Text is not searchable or selectable and links are not interactive. If the recipient needs searchable text, accessible document structure or automated resume parsing, use the PDF export in your document editor instead.

Prepare a local copy

Open the example below in WhatTheFile and choose the Word document. Review Document must be PDF and prepare the file. The document content stays on your device. Direct compression of the original DOCX is not supported.

Check layout before sending

Open every page of the PDF. Compare headings, tables, fonts and page breaks against the original. Complex Word layouts can differ, especially when fonts are unavailable. If something moves or disappears, return to your editor and export there.

We will open WhatTheFile and place Document must be PDF in the requirement box. You can review and change it before preparing your file.
